Hyatt Regency San Diego
One Market Place San Diego, CA 92101

Well, the best view in town is still the one from the Top of the Hyatt, 40 floors above the city's waterfront in the Manchester Grand Hyatt hotel. You know, the one that looks like a giant CD holder or razor blade.

The Top of the Hyatt has been impressing tourists and conventioneers for years, of course, but its value as a cozy spot for two can't be overestimated. For Valentine's Day, the rooftop bar is a natural for a quiet drink together and a bird's-eye view of San Diego.

To the west - the bay, Seaport Village, Coronado, Point Loma, jets swooping in and out of Lindbergh Field. And don't forget the sunsets. To the east, the urban-sprawl panorama is less picturesque, though after dark, twinkling lights are still twinkling lights and therefore possessive of a certain undeniable charm.

So we know the view, from what the bar menu touts as "the West Coast's tallest waterfront building," is spectacular. Always has been.

The trouble has been that in the past, seats next to the high glass windows have been at a premium (it's first come, first seated), and sitting in the middle of the room here is rather like going to Waikiki Beach and spending your time in the motel pool. A renovation about eight months ago, designed to maximize access to the view, has resulted in a three-tiered arrangement, with window-facing cocktail tables, counter seats and banquettes.

It's still wise to keep in mind the Top of the Hyatt's busiest times, according to spokesman Barry Prescott: at sunset hour; from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.; and nightly during major conventions. (The bar is open daily from 3 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.)

Thickly carpeted and furnished in dark woods and sedate wallpapering, the bar is dimly lit and relatively low-key, even when busy. There's no live entertainment (or, thank goodness, some corny piano-man). Candle-lit tables with cushioned chairs are smartly spaced for those private tete-a-tetes.

You'll see a mix of locals, tourists and convention folks in here, so attire will run a vast gamut, from business classy to T-shirt-shop tacky. But come on, dress up a little. It won't hurt. Really.

Drinks are on the pricy side, though Gaslamp-tavern prices aren't much lower, and in some places even top the Top. Specialty cocktails are $4.25 to $7.50, martinis between eight and nine bucks (the Black Martini, with vodka and kahlúa and whipped cream, a bar specialty, is $8.75). Wines by the glass go for $6 to $15, and beer is $4.50 to $5.75. I don't think you come here to slurp a brew, but I'm sure it happens.

Appetizers include a cheese plate for $9 and a tasty hot crab dip for $13.50.

You may visit the Top of the Hyatt only a few times a year. Maybe only on Valentine's Day. So you're not apt to quibble about drink prices, or the fact that the bar doesn't validate your hotel parking below.
