The San Diego Civic Theatre
The Civic Theatre is located in the San Diego Concourse, at the intersection of Third Avenue and B Street in downtown San Diego.
The first recorded theatrical performances in San Diego were in 1858 at the San Diego
Mission. United States soldiers of Company D, Third Artillery,
commanded by a Major Blake brought the theater to town with a season of six popular plays of the period, plus a world premiere: "The Smiths and the
Browns of San Diego," a comedy set in the Franklin House in Old Town. Soldiers' wives and local women took the female parts. The organization formed by
the men of Company D was called The American Dramatic Club. Between April 19 and June 2, 1858, this group produced The Lady of Lyons, The Idiot Witness,
and The Death of Rollo. The Civic Theatre is where most San Diegans will see the opera - through the San Diego Opera - and touring Broadway
extravaganzas like "Miss Saigon'' and "The Who's Tommy,'' since the cavernous house is big enough to land a helicopter in.
Built in 1966, it's the main component of the downtown complex known as the San Diego Concourse and Performing Arts Center. As befits a place where opera and symphony are on the bill, the theater's plush seats - just shy of 3000 - are
arranged by floor (orchestra and dress circle), second level (mezzanine and lowerloge) and third level (balcony and upper loge),
the cheapest being the third level. If you're going to an opera or classical music performance to be seen, dress well. The audience here still does,
especially for the opera's opening nights. But if you're actually going to hear the music, you wouldn't feel under-dressed in a casual skirt or pants, not
jeans.
