Wild Animal Park
[Information Update - July 14, 2010]

If you're uncomfortable with visiting traditional zoos, feeling that caging wild creatures is cruel or unnatural, consider visiting the 1,800 acre San Diego Wild Animal Park. The areas at the San Diego Wild Animal Park are large and open - animals mingle just like they do in the wild, and visitors can see them as they might be seen in their native Asia and Africa. As if that weren't enough, the San Diego Wild Animal Park is also a veritable Noah's Ark. In its nearly 30-year history, hundreds of endangered species babies have been born in the park, and dozens of nearly-extinct species have been re-introduced into the wild.
There are paths to walk on to visit smaller exhibits, but the highlight of a visit to the San Diego Wild Animal Park is the hour-long trip on the Wgasa Bush Line Railway - the closest many of us will ever come to seeing these critters in their natural environment.
Hints for a Good San Diego Wild Animal Park Visit
The San Diego Wild Animal Park is located 32 miles north of the city in Escondido.
During the summer, ten to fifteen thousand people visit the San Diego Wild Animal Park every day. In the winter, the people-to-animal ratio is much lower, and on a recent sunny February day only 1,800 people were in the park.
Walk a while, then take the railway, then walk some more.
It can get quite hot. Be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen and water.
